Really all you have to do to not look “emo” is have some basic motor skills and avoid drawing tacky, uneven circles around your eyes.
Soften the harsh eyeliner by using a dark color [dark brown, charcoal etc] then applying some eyeshadow over the area you colored with the pencil. Add a coat of liquid liner to your lash line and you'll have a very dark, but refined look. Or you could go for full blown cat eyes, which really just involves whisping out the liner and layering the eyeshadow with a highlight near your browbone. You can purchase eyeshadow quads [compact with four specially shaded shadows for using for smokey looks] at pretty much any place that sells makeup. It depends on what exactly you mean by think eyeliner. The way you do your makeup won't label you. Labels are so superfical anyway. I wear think eyeliner all the time. I wear think liquid liner with a winged out tip, but not like Amy Winehouse, more toned down. I wear thick black pencil eyeliner and smudge it to get that “smokey eye” look.

It really depends on your skin tone. Dark brown or caramels might work better for you. Thick eyeliner doesn't really look that good on most people. Maybe try a smokey eye instead.
