I was spanked as a child and I see no problem with it. Never taught me any harm, certainly made me respect my parents though..I never would be rude to them incase I got punished and we’ve a very strong relationship.
So yes spanking is fine, some mums just make such a big deal out of it.

But I had clothes on!

Spanking in my thought is NEVER okay. I believe it instructs your child to learn to associate conflict resolution with violence. Your child should be disciplined in a manner that he or she understands what’s wrong and then has the oppurtunity to use his or her words to talk it out with you. A successfull well adjusted child will be able to explain his feelings and express his frustrations verbally without needing to resort to violence. My brother and I were both physically disciplined and throughout our childhood we would physically fight all the time. This is what we were taught. If something was done wrong- hit the person to make it superior. My brother went on to fight a lot in High School as well. Also, even if you do adopt the policy of spanking, it is child abuse to hit another parent's child. I would advocate evaluating your options of discipline and talking them over (if age appropriate) with your child. I am a live in nanny and their worst punishment is sibling separation (having to be in separate rooms from eachother). Before this is enacted we first try to talk through the conflict at first by themselves and if that does not work- with adult intervention. Good luck…I hope you see the negative consequences of hitting a child.

OK, lots of questions. I find some of them really odd. Why would you even consider “spanking in front of a mirror so they can watch” or “spanking in front of their friends”? That's just weird. First off, spanking isn't illegal (at least not in the USA) but it can’t be hard enough to leave a mark on the child. I rarely spank my child, only when she is being blatantly disobedient, particularly if she’s doing something that will hurt her more than a spanking (i.e. not wearing her seat belt when she was told to put it on). She is only four and I doubt I’ll continue to spank for much longer as she’s getting older. I totally don’t believe in spanking older kids, especially teenagers. Spanking the bare bottom is gross in my thought. Sounds kind of perverted.
