My tiny girl has been constipated FOREVER it seems. I don't know what could be causing this. She drinks water like there's no tomorrow. I give her juice and she only drinks milk with her meals (2-3 a day) She LOVES veggies and fruit and will eat them every chance she gets. She gets to the point that she screams and cries for hours until she can push it out and when she does her little bottom bleeds sometimes.

I’ve tried karo syrup, prune juice, regular juice (apple, grape, pear…..) and I’ve even given her glycerin suppositories and nothing helps. Can I give her a laxative and is there anything I do to her diet that might help so that she doesn't have to go through this every other day.

Please help any information with be appreciated. I’ve 2 older children and neither one of them ever got this bad.

Answer:
My son is 2 1/2 and has suffered SEVERE constipation since birth. He has been hospitalized many, many, times for it.Since you mentioned that you’ve tried all the other things I am going to suggest some other stuff…
1)Little Tummy's all natural Senna-it is a all natural laxative made for babies and kids.It is made from 100% senna. It is with the Little Tummy's products in your local Pharmacy. It runs about $4.50

2)continue to try juice,Gerber pear,or apple/prune

3)Light corn oil
4)Yo baby yogurt-it is in the yogurt section and is made for babies. It contains live active cultures that will stimulate the bowels.
5)Mira-lax

I would try the other things that I mentioned before you try the mira-lax it is approved for kids but although it states it is gentle it does cause some cramping.Good luck and I hope this helps you!

Answer:
Make sure you’ve talked to your doctor about this. I know this don't prevent it but if you’re going to use suppositories use the liquid one. They make them for children and they work a lot superior. It is liquid glycerin My son used to get constipated all the time. The hard glycerin suppositories would cause him to have a bowel movement but didn't help much with the pain and getting it out fast. The liquid helps lube it better and it makes it a tiny easier. Not pain free but better.

Sorry you are going through this and I hope she feels better soon.

Answer:
Have you taken her to the doctor?, she may have developed a bowel or stomach condition that is causing this.poor tiny thing.
I remember when my infant got constipated from those rice cereals that she first ate.She would cry and grunt and go red and bleed a littlees.it was heart breaking.

Answer:
out of everything you’ve said there i think what your missing is fibre. fibre is essential for bowel movement. make sure she’s getting bread and wheat, maybe give her weetbix for breakfast, but if this doesn't help take your child to the hospital.

Answer:
I’ve the same problem with my three year old. Give her apple prune juice daily, and go buy some fiber powder from wal-mart. You can mix it in to her juice or food. I know this is so exhausting.

Answer:
i had the same thing when i was younger. if shes taking vitamins, it will make her REALLY constipated.

Answer:
try miralax powder, you mix it in their drink,my daughters been taking it since she was 9 months old

Answer:
My 14 month old son gets like that from time to time, maybe once a month. He’s the same way, loves fruit. I know if he eats a lot of veggie high in iron it can bring on the constipation though.

Glycerin sup's are the only safe laxative for a child her age though. You can try to give more fiber-rich foods. (ie my son eats raisin bran for breakfast with orange slices) both of those things are very high in fiber.

If slipping her bran once a day isn't helping her and cutting back on a lot of iron-rich veggies (like the dark green ones) then try speaking to your doctor.

Answer:
My almost 4 year has had constipation issues since he was 4 months. My physician has put him on Miralax when it was a prescription and we tried with him off and he again had problems. By then it was over the counter and that is what we’ve been using. My younger son also has had issues with constipation, so he also uses Miralax. I would talk to your physician for initial dosing to get her bowels moving and then gradually reduce the amount to where the stool is the right consistency. Right now, both boys get 1/2 tsp in the morning in their juice. Once in spring they got off it for about 2 weeks and both had problems. Their doctor says to leave them on it for now because it isn’t harming them in anyway like some laxatives can. Daycare and myself moniter their stools and adjust amounts and frequency accordingly. Not to sound like a commercial but Miralax is what we use. It cost about $30 for a big bottle, but that lasts several months do to the small amount I use everyday. The price is worth their comfort.
