My toddler is 17 months old. He has always been very independent. He started eating finger foods really young. He refuses to eat anything mashed like mashed potatoes, applesauce, oatmeal, etc. Do you think it's so bad if he doesn't eat anything mashed and might he pick it up down the road?

Answer:
My boy is 18 months and he’s a massive finger food eater!! Will never eat anything mashed. i do struggle finding things for a family to eat which don't include casseroles and mashed foods!! he too started finger foods early and was breastfed which usually means they’re independent and they’ve always been in control of their food!!

nothing to worry about. my son has just started eating beans and i make it on big fluffy white bread put the beans on and then melt cheese on top. this way the beans stay on the toast and he had beans cheese and toast…. hooray a step forward!!

Just so you know, all of those mothers spoon feeding their babies are probably jealous that your child is feeding himself, where as it's nice to be able to eat with your kids, instead of feeding them, cleaning them up, and then MAYBE eating something yourself.

My 18 month old eats almost everything some of the time, and then nothing the rest of the time. Whatever she’s eating though, she eats on her own. Even applesauce.

Personally, I can't (and never could) eat anything with the consistency of yogurt or jello. Some people just don't like certain textures. It's no massive deal. I mean if he'll eat apples, and baked/roasted/boiled potatoes, then it doesn't really matter if he's eating them mashes, does it?

17 months is definitely self-feeding time though. My daughters been using a fork and spoon for months now, and when that doesn't work, she always digs in with her hands.

Answer:
awww.. my tiny girl wont eat anything mashed either, but thats because i have to feed it to her… she nearly always refuses to allow me to feed her. I do attempt at least once or more a week to give her something like applesauce, i try and feed it to her, she denies it, so i allow her to try and feed it to herself.

I think he weill deftly pick it up later.

Answer:
No biggie. It might be a texture thing that he doesn't like about it. You can always try reintroducing them again later. Just let him have small chunks of cooked potato to pick up. Small pieces of apple (peeled) are fine as well if they’re cut thin or in small pea size pieces for him to eat.
Taste buds change each few years so who knows? Maybe when he starts school he'll like some of those things… maybe not. As long as he's eating a healthy variety of other things in his diet then if this is the only few things he won't eat, think about yourself blessed and fortunate!

Answer:
Not a problem. He probably can't yet manage a spoon but doesn't want to be fed. So he eats things he has the ability to pick up and self feed.

As he gets more adept with the spoon/fork, he'll be able to eat mashed stuff, just like adults do.

Answer:
No large deal. And he’ll probably change his mind.
